KING OF THE CREEKS, TOMPOLO EKPEMUPOLO GETS RENEWED CONTRACT FROM FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ON OIL THEFT IN THE NIGER-DELTA. FG TO PAY HIM 4BN MONTHLY.
The Niger-Deltan region in Nigeria is known for its rich oil resources and most niger- deltan states are oil producing states. In former president GoodLuck Jonathan's regime, top priority was given to the creeks and Tompolo was the commander of the defunct movement for emancipation of Niger-Delta ( MEND).
As this regime came into office, MEND was immediately defunct by president Muhammadu Buhari's administration thereby stopping all surveillance on oil theft in Nigeria.
Result was that oil bunkering and oil theft increased in the Niger Deltan region and across Nigeria leading to the country loosing 500,000 barrels per Day. That's a massive.
Mr Ekpemupolo Tompolo was one time accused by EFCC but was later found innocent of all allegations. On Wednesday, the federal government and the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited ( NNPC) signed a multi billion naira contract to bring back the king of the creeks, Tompolo, to renew his role as the eye of the creeks which entails him monitoring and overseeing surveillance contracts, illegal bunkering, illegal refining, and other oil thefts. Tompolo will be paid 4bn monthly by the FG for this Job.
As MEND resumes operations, there is likely to be an increase in production and other activities around it.
Now big questions are: Bringing back the king of the creeks at this time , when the country's oil and gas sector has suffered a setback, is this a campaign strategy for the APC party? Why would Mr president okay this contract now, after all, Mr Tompolo was relieved of his MEND position by same president Muhammadu Buhari and then which way forward for the nation's oil and gas sector?
